Because of this, I may occasionally mention alternative local stores or suppliers where similar baking tools can be found at more affordable prices for South African readers.

Starting a baking business or journey is exciting since you’ll be having big dreams about it….I’ve been there, and at some point I wasted so much money in things I wouldn’t need. This blog will help you decide on items or baking tools you need to get started with baking without spending so much.

I remember myself going to buy ‘baking tools’ for starting my baking business. I bought even cake toppers, and later I realised that I wasted money because most of them were not used since customers wanted different or specific toppers for their cakes.

It is very important to understand basic tools that are important at the beginning stage. Other things, you only buy them as the time goes on or when a clients orders such as toppers. Investing in these tools will help with get your baking right, reduce mistakes, and ensure that you bake with confidence.

These are tools I personally recommend to anyone starting their baking journey based on my personal experience, affordability, convenience, and durability.

Why Good Baking Tools Matter

Many beginner bakers would focus more on getting the good recipe, and when they do not get exact result as of the recipe developer they get angry and start pushing blames. Sometimes the real issue was that you did not invest in baking tools that would help get the recipe right.

For example, if the recipe calls for 1 cup of flour…it does not mean you should take teacup or a mug and use it to measure because that would be WRONG! Just get yourself measuring cups to avoid troubles.

Using right equipments will help you bake more accurately, and achieve better results. Even if you do not get the recipe correct, it shouldn’t be because of YOU missing tools…..baking tools are the CORE of baking journey.

Baking is science, it not like regular cooking where you can use your eyes and heart to measure. It is very precise and small mistakes in measuring, mixing, or baking can completely change the texture and appearance of your cakes. That is why using reliable baking tools is a first important step for both beginner and experienced bakers.

Even simple tools like silicone spatulas and cooling racks make a noticeable difference in your baking experience.

The good thing is that you do not need to buy them all at once, but when you do – buy good quality for durability. You do not want to keep buying one thing because it was broken after one month purchase, the baking tools list is endless…. these are JUST basics tools.

Start with the essentials, practice your skills, and gradually build your baking collection over time.

1. Measuring Cups & Spoons

These are first tools you need to get before others. Accurate measuring is one of the most important parts of baking. Like we said, baking focus more on precision. Too much flour or too little flour changes the whole recipe result, so make sure you get measuring cups or spoons.

I would recommend using stainless steel meauring cups and spoons.

  • They last longer than any other type
  • They are easier to clean
  • They keep their engraved measurements

2. Mixing Bowls

When you buy mixing bowl, look for:

  • The quality of the bowl (will it last me for longer time?)
  • Non-slip base
  • Go for multiple sizes (if you have good budget )
  • Stainless steel or durable plastic
  • Airtight lead

3. Silicone Spatula / Wooden Spoon

Silicone spatula is one of the tools worth owning as a beginner. It helps you scrape bowls properly, fold ingredients gently, and mix batters without wasting ingredients.

This is the best tool for soft batter and delicate mixtures because they are flexible and gentle such as cake, cupcake, and pancake batter, and frosting or cream.

Silicone Spatulas are:

  • Easy to clean
  • Does not scratch bowls
  • Flexible and easy to control
  • Gentle on delicate mixtures
  • Easy to scrape off batter without waste

Wooden spoons are also very important in baking, especially when working with heavier doughs and traditional baked goods like scones, or cookies

Having both mixing tools in your kitchen makes baking easier because different batters and doughs require different mixing methods.

4. Seive Set

Many of us when we were beginners, we used to see no need to sift flour because we thought it an unnecessary step. Sifting flour gets rid of lumps, aerates (air added) the flour which give softer and fluffier cakes. Sometimes flour, cocoa powder, icing sugar, and baking powder develop lumps during storage. If these lumps are added directly into batter, they can create uneven mixing and affect the final texture and taste.

You may consider getting different sizes for convience. Most interesting thing is that, seive are available in most stores. Buying a quality with save you from buying it from time to time.

When You Should Definitely Sieve Flour

You should always consider sieving when:

  • The recipe specifically says “sifted flour”
  • Using cocoa powder
  • Making soft sponge cakes
  • Mixing dry ingredients together
  • Flour has been stored for a long time
  • You want smoother cake batter

5. Whisks Set

Whisk is one of the great tools to invest on to avoid overmixing your batter. Many new bakers only buy one whisk, but having different whisk sizes makes baking much easier, faster, and more efficient.

Instead of buying just one whisk, BUY A SET!

Different recipes may require different whisk types and sizes because batters, creams, sauces, and eggs all have different textures. The set usuall comes into 3 set (small, medium, and large).

6. Cooling Rack

When I started baking journey, I never had cooling rack, and as I baked more often, I saw the gap of not having it. It just one of those tools overlooked by most beginner bakers.

Not having cooling rack lead to bakers removing cakes, cookies, or muffins from the oven and leaving them inside the baking pan or placing them directly onto a plate or countertop. This can trap heat and steam underneath the baked goods, affecting the texture and sometimes making them soggy.

Many of us bakers spend money on mixers, cake pans, and decorating tools but forget about cooling racks because they seem less exciting.

However, professional bakers know that cooling is part of the baking process, not just something that happens afterward. Even the best cake recipe can lose quality if it cools incorrectly.

Not all cooling racks are the same. Some cheap racks bend easily or rust after a short time which cause it not to be safe for food.

Here are important things beginners should look for:

  • Choose racks with sturdy metal wires that do not bend under the weight of cakes.
  • Cooling racks with smaller grid patterns are better
  • Stainless steel racks are usually best because they resist rust, last longer, and clean more easily.
  • Some cooling racks are oven-safe, which makes them even more versatile.
  • Choose a rack size that fits your baking tray, and counter space.

7. Cookie Cutter

Scones are one of the first recipes many beginner bakers learn because they are simple, affordable, and beginner-friendly. That is why owning a round cookie cutter or scone cutter becomes very important early in your baking journey.

Most cookie cutter tools are cheaper than most tools and are very hard to find in shops. The last one I have I got it after several times going to shops to look.

Using appropriate cutter helps with a good shape and perfect rising in the oven. They make scones look more professional and prevent rough edges.

TIP: Press the cutting down, and do not twist your cutter when cutting scones.

Twisting seals the edges of the dough, which can prevent scones from rising properly in the oven.

This small technique makes a huge difference in achieving soft, fluffy, well-risen scones. Learn more about scones and get the recipe here

8. Baking Paper

When I started baking, I would use butter or margarine to ensure that sponge do not stick to a pan, not until I invested in baking paper. Also known as parchment paper, baking paper helps prevent baked goods from sticking to trays, cake pans, and baking sheets.

What I love the most about them, it make cleaning process of pans more easier, and removing cakes is easier without breaking them.

Although baking paper can sometimes be substituted with greasing, flouring pans, or using silicone baking mats, it is still one of the most convenient baking supplies every beginner baker should keep in their kitchen

If possible, it is usually better to buy larger baking paper rolls instead of very small packs. The larger rolls last longer, they are better value for money easier to cut for different pan sizes, useful for larger cakes and trays, and great for batch baking.

List of stores with best options:
  • Amazon
  • Yippiechef
  • Bakery supplies shops

Food shops normally keep the regular size which is not convenient for everyday use in baking journey.

9. Cake Pans

When I started I made lot of mistakes when it comes to baking pans.….I can’t even remember how many times I messed up recipes just because I had poor quality pans. I wouldn’t want you to do the same I did.

We tend to focus more on getting right ingredients and forget that pans can mess it all up. A good pan should bake evenly, rise properly, and release cake easily after baking.

Cheap pans often:

  • Bake unevenly
  • Burn cake edges
  • Create dry cakes
  • Warp in the oven
  • Rust quickly
  • Cause cakes to stick

If you baking pan does the mentioned, PLEASE keep it away.

Best Cake Pan Materials to Invest In:
  • Aluminium Cake Pans (Best Choice)
  • Non-Stick Cake Pans (avoid cheap non-stick pans because coating may peel or scratch easily)
  • Create dry cakes

Having different cake pan sizes gives you more flexibility in baking and decorating cakes.

Mostly useful cake Pans:

5 inch cake pan perfect for:

  • Small celebration cakes
  • Bento cakes
  • Tall cakes
  • Practice cakes

7-Inch cake pans are most versatile size for beginners.

Perfect for:

  • Birthday cakes
  • Layer cakes
  • Everyday cakes
  • Sponge cakes

Most beginner recipes are designed for 7-inch pans.

It good and recommended to own at least 2–3 pans of the same size.

List of stores with best options:
  • Amazon
  • Yippiechef
  • Bakery Supplies Shops (always check the quality)

10. Muffins or Cupcake Pan

Like we said, the pan you use affect the final result of baked goods. Good quality pans help your cupcakes rise evenly, muffins bake consistently, prevent sticking, and improve the overall appearance.

What to avoid when purchase muffin pans:
  • Very thin pans
  • Cheap lightweight trays
  • Pans that bend easily
  • Poor-quality non-stick coatings
  • Rust-prone materials
The best muffin pans for beginners are usually:
  • Heavy-gauge aluminium
  • Carbon steel
  • High-quality non-stick pans
List of shops with best options:
  • Amazon
  • Lecreuset
  • Yippiechef
  • And many others available in shopping store (check their brand for quality)

Honestly, building your baking collection does not have to happen overnight. Start with the essential baking tools that will make the biggest difference in your baking journey, then slowly upgrade your equipment as your skills improve.
