This is one of the recipes I just fell in love with when I started baking, I find it easy to follow. And I wanna be honest that sometimes you get them right, sometimes you do NOT!
There are multiple times I’ve baked them…sometimes they came out fluffy and good but sometimes they would be hard because of overbaking them. So I am trying to make it a point that when you’re first time baker you may get this recipe right, others might not. AND IT’S OKAY!
It just part of learning and growing in the baking industry. My first few attempts at cinnamon rolls were far from perfect. I rushed the dough, didn’t always measure correctly, and sometimes ended up with rolls that were either too dry or not soft enough.
There were times the filling leaked out, or the rolls didn’t rise the way I expected. But those mistakes taught me something important: that baking aren’t about rushing, but about understanding the process and being patient with it. Otherwise you’re just wasting your ingredients.
In most cases, we know cinnamon rolls go so well with cream cheese frosting..RIGHT! Aike! this time around I didnt have cream cheese and I tried something different. stay tuned…
What Makes This Recipe Stand Out
- Unique ingredients (like heavy cream, yoghurt, Oreos)
- Oreo’s are the fav
- The cream was not too sweet since I use heavy cream and less icing
- The fluffness and softness of rolls
- Freezer-friendly recipe
Ingredients Breakdown for Oreo Cream Cinnamon Rolls
Before we jump into the mixing and baking, let’s slow down for a second and really understand what makes these oreo cream cinnamon rolls so soft, rich, and honestly… hard to stop eating.
A lot of people rush through the ingredient list, but this is actually where the magic starts. Each ingredient has a purpose. When you understand why you’re using something, your baking improves instantly….. and your cinnamon rolls come out better every single time.
Let’s break it down:
For the Dough
All-Purpose Flour or Cake Flour
This is the foundation of your cinnamon rolls. It gives structure to the dough while still keeping it soft and tender. Too little flour and your rolls collapse, too much and they turn dense. Make sure you stick to the recipe measurement and use correct measuring tools.
Warm Milk
Warm milk activates the yeast while adding richness to the dough. It also helps create that soft, fluffy texture we all love in cinnamon rolls.
Warm Water
Adding warm water helps balance the dough’s hydration and supports yeast activation. It also makes the dough easier to work with and knead. Other do not like to use water, it totally up to you. If you skip water, add the same amount of milk to substitute.
Active Dry Yeast
This is what makes your dough rise. Yeast creates air bubbles, giving you light, airy rolls instead of heavy ones. You may realise that you’re using more yeast than you thought you might need, do not hesitate to use what the recipe tell you.
Sugar
Sugar does more than sweeten your dough…… it feeds the yeast, helping it activate faster and rise better. It also adds a slight softness to the final texture. I recommend using white or granulated sugar for your dough to enhance colour.
Butter (Melted)
Butter adds richness and flavor. It also helps create a soft crumb and keeps the rolls from drying out. Do not forget to melt it in the microwave so that it easily combines with other ingredients.
Eggs
Eggs bring structure and richness. They make the dough more tender and give your cinnamon rolls a beautiful, slightly golden texture. The good thing is that, you do not need to use that much of eggs. My recipe calls for 1 egg, unless you decide to double the recipe.
Salt
Salt might seem small, but it’s powerful. It balances sweetness and enhances all the other flavors in your dough. Use fine salt that easily blend-in with other ingredients.
For the Cinnamon Filling
Brown Sugar
This is what gives that deep, caramel-like sweetness inside your rolls. It melts beautifully and creates that sticky, gooey center. Never make a mistake of using white sugar because it doesnt blend-in to give the desired look or colour. If you decide to use white, please use honey to give that caramel colour and sweetness.
Ground Cinnamon
The heart of any cinnamon roll. It brings warmth, aroma, and that classic flavor everyone expects. Make sure you add the correct amount of cinnamon the recipe mentions
Butter (Softened)
Butter helps the filling spread easily and keeps it rich and moist as it bakes. Do not microwave, keep it outside until it soft.
For the Oreo Cream Frosting
Crushed Oreo Cookies
This is what makes these oreo cream cinnamon rolls stand out. The cookies add crunch, chocolate flavor, and that signature cookies-and-cream taste.
Heavy Cream
Heavy cream makes the frosting smooth, rich, and pourable. It also adds a luxurious finish to your rolls. Make sure you whip it till a stiff consistency as the method tells you. It very important to use good quality heavy cream….this is a foundation of your frosting.
Plain Yoghurt
This adds a slight tang that balances the sweetness and gives the frosting a creamy, light texture.
Powdered Sugar
This sweetens and thickens the frosting, giving you that perfect drizzle consistency. REMEMBER: Always sift your icing sugar to avoid lumps.
Step-by-Step To making perfect oreo cream cinnamon rolls
Step 1: Activate and Prepare the Dough
In a bowl, combine the warm milk, warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 5–10 minutes until it becomes foamy.
Tip: Your liquid should be warm, not hot—too much heat will kill the yeast.
Mistake to avoid: Skipping this step or rushing it can lead to dense rolls that don’t rise properly.
Step 2: Mix and Knead the Dough
Add the egg, melted butter, salt, and flour. Mix until a soft dough forms, then knead for about 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
Tip: If the dough feels too sticky, add a little flour gradually—but don’t overdo it.
Mistake to avoid: Adding too much flour will make your rolls dry instead of soft.
Step 3: First Rise
Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise in a warm place for about 20-25 minutes.
Tip: A slightly warm oven (turned off) works perfectly for rising.
Mistake to avoid: Letting the dough rise in a cold area will slow the process and affect texture
Step 4: Roll and Fill
Roll out the dough into a rectangle. Spread the softened butter, then sprinkle the cinnamon and brown sugar evenly. Alternatively, make a paste and spread it evenly.
Tip: Press the filling gently into the dough so it sticks well.
Mistake to avoid: Uneven spreading leads to some rolls lacking flavor.
Step 5: Shape the Rolls
Roll the dough tightly from one end and slice into even pieces.
Tip: Use a sharp knife or dental floss for clean cuts.
Mistake to avoid: Cutting with a blunt knife squashes the rolls and affects their shape.
Step 6: Second Rise
Place the rolls in a baking dish, cover, and let them rise again for about 1 hour.
Tip: Don’t skip the second rise—it makes the rolls extra soft and fluffy.
Mistake to avoid: Baking immediately after shaping results in dense rolls.
Step 7: Bake
Bake at 180°C for 20–25 minutes until golden brown.
Tip: Keep an eye on them toward the end to avoid overbaking.
Mistake to avoid: Overbaking dries out the rolls quickly.
Step 8: Make the Oreo Cream Frosting
Whip heavy creamy for 10 minutes till foamy or have stiff peak.
Mix powdered sugar, crushed Oreos, yoghurt, and vanilla paste and whip until smooth and creamy.
Tip: Adjust the cream to get your desired consistency.
Mistake to avoid: Adding too much liquid at once can make the frosting too runny.
Step 9: Frost and Serve
Spread the frosting over warm rolls so it melts slightly into the layers.
Tip: Frost while the rolls are still warm—not hot—for the best texture.
Mistake to avoid: Frosting when too hot will cause it to completely melt and disappear.
Pro Tips for Perfect Oreo Cream Cinnamon Rolls
Do not overbake
- Do not overbake your cinnamon roll. This is one of the most common mistakes, especially if you’re waiting for that deep golden color. Cinnamon rolls continue cooking slightly even after you take them out of the oven, so pulling them out when they’re just lightly golden on top keeps them soft and tender inside. Overbaking will dry them out quickly, and that’s the last thing you want.
Use warm milk
- Always use warm milk not HOT. When activating your yeast, temperature matters more than you might think. Warm milk helps wake up the yeast and encourages a good rise, giving your dough that fluffy texture we all love in cinnamon rolls. If the milk is too hot, it can actually kill the yeast, which means your dough won’t rise properly
Let dough rise properly
- Let your dough rise properly. Rushing this process might save time, but it will COST you in texture and overall quality.
Be patient
- Don’t forget that your ingredients and environment play a role too. If your kitchen is cold, your dough may take longer to rise, and that’s completely normal. Be patient and give it the time it needs. Try to put it in a oven (DON’T TURN IT ON THOUGH). Baking is not just about following steps only but it’s about understanding how everything works together.
Creative Ways to Make Oreo Cream Cinnamon Rolls Your Own
One of the best things about cinnamon rolls is how easy they are to customize. Once you’ve mastered the base recipe, you can start playing around with flavors, ingredients, and even baking methods to suit your taste, budget, or kitchen setup.
Different Flavors to Try
If you love experimenting in the kitchen, this is where it gets fun. You can switch up the filling or topping to create a completely new experience every time.
Add crushed chocolate chips for a richer bite, mix in peanut butter with your Oreo cream for a nutty twist, or even add a hint of coffee to deepen the flavor.
You could also swap Oreos for other biscuits you enjoy, but still keep that creamy frosting style that makes these rolls special.
Budget-Friendly Swaps
You don’t always need fancy ingredients to make delicious oreo cream cinnamon rolls. If heavy cream feels expensive, just do icing glaze on top. You can also change oreo’s to any other biscuit you find convenient. You can remove yoghurt, it’s not compulsory.
How to Store Oreo Cream Cinnamon Rolls for Maximum Freshness
Once you’ve made a batch of soft, gooey oreo cream cinnamon rolls, the real challenge begins — making them last (if they don’t get finished the same day!). The good news is, with the right storage method, you can keep them tasting just as soft and indulgent for days.
Room Temperature vs Fridge Storage
If you plan to enjoy your cinnamon rolls within 1–2 days, keeping them at room temperature is perfectly fine. Just make sure they are stored in an airtight container or tightly wrapped so they don’t dry out.
For longer storage, the fridge is your best option. Place the rolls in a sealed container or cover them well with cling wrap. They will stay fresh for about 4–5 days, although the texture may become slightly firmer due to the butter and cream in the frosting.
Reheating Tips (Bringing Them Back to Life)
No one likes a dry cinnamon roll, so reheating is key. Warm them in the microwave for about 10–15 seconds to bring back that soft, melt-in-your-mouth texture. If you want that “fresh from the oven” feel, heat them gently in the oven at a low temperature for a few minutes.
If you’re adding extra Oreo cream frosting after reheating, even better….. it melts slightly.

1. Activate the yeast
Warm your milk until it is lukewarm (not hot, just comfortably warm to the touch). Pour it into a bowl and add the sugar and dry yeast. Stir gently and let it sit for 8–10 minutes until it becomes foamy on top. This shows your yeast is active and ready.2. Make the dough
In a large bowl, add flour and salt. Pour in the yeast mixture, melted butter, and egg. Mix until a soft dough forms.Knead the dough for about 8–10 minutes by hand (or 5–6 minutes using a mixer) until it becomes smooth and elastic. If it feels too sticky, add a little flour gradually.3. First rise
Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl. Cover with a clean towel or plastic wrap. Let it rise in a warm place for 20-25 minutes.4. Prepare the filling
In a small bowl, mix softened butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon until it forms a smooth paste. Crush your Oreo cookies and set aside.5. Roll and fill
Once the dough has risen, roll it out on a floured surface into a large rectangle (about 1 cm thick).Spread the cinnamon butter evenly over the dough. Sprinkle crushed Oreos on top.6. Shape the rolls
Carefully roll the dough tightly into a log. Cut into equal slices (about 10–12 rolls).Place them into a greased baking dish, leaving a little space between each roll.7. Second rise
Cover again and let the rolls rise for 1 hour until puffy.8. Bake
Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F). Bake the rolls for 20–25 minutes or until golden brown and cooked through.9. Make the Oreo cream frosting
Whip the heavy cream until soft peaks form. Fold in or whip yogurt (or cream cheese), powdered sugar, vanilla paste or extract, and crushed Oreos. Mix until creamy and smooth.10. Frost and serve
Once the rolls are slightly cooled (but still warm), spread the Oreo cream frosting generously on top. Let it melt into the rolls for that rich, gooey finish.
